The changes and dual system of the bridal costume by considering wedding dresses including the Wharot and Won-sam in Joseon dynasty are studied in this paper.
This study reveals several customs related with the bridal costume. First, a costume allows to wear costumes for the prince and the princess in wedding ceremony regardless of the social status. Second, wedding costumes are borrowed. Third, there are regional varieties. Forth, a dual system that uses two different kinds of bridal costumes during the wedding procedure.
The Hongjangsam, a wedding dress in red color is basically worn during the wedding ceremony, and Wharot, a Hongjangsam with an embroidery is used after the 17th century. The embroidery consists of phoenix, lotus, egret, peony and butterfly, an orchid, stone and waves, and letters that hope love, long life, richness, abundance, and many children. In the 19th century, the Won-sam styled Sa-Kyu-Sam in green came from the motive of the red trimmed Yeum-eui suggested by scholars. And finally the Wonsam without red stripes, a married lady's ceremonial dress, were used for the bride in the 20th century.
In the Hyunkukorye that is a ceremony procedure held in groom's house after the wedding ceremony, the Won-Sam of a married lady's ceremonial dress had been used constantly and the bride changes into the Wharot during the coming-of-age ceremony.
