The aim of this study understands the current situation and issues of the system of weights and measure in ancient Korea. Following two main points are the conclusion of this study.
Firstly, the studies on ancient weights and measure were started from the researches of Goguryeo Cheok(尺) - a unit of measurement in Korea, and Dongwi Cheok(東魏尺) has been treated as a synonym with Goguryeo Cheok. The researchers have been understood the Cheok had used in all three kingdoms at that time. However, ‘Goguryeo Cheok" is now taken a unit which not only had appeared in Goguryeo independently, but also is different from Dongwi Cheok. The new trend believes that Goguryeo Cheok had been used in Goguryeo and Japan as a unit of measuring farm land(Yangjeon Cheok, 量田尺) definitely, but it is required further examination the fact that this Cheok had been circulated in Baekje and Silla in common. Cheok was used in Tang dynasty(Tangdae Cheok, 唐大尺), which was excavated in Ssangbuk-ri, Buyeo and Lisung hill fort in Hanam, shows that is had used in Baekje and Silla during 7th Century. Han Cheok(漢尺) seems to be circulated in three kingdoms from early ages through analogy, because of the evidence from the Cheok was discovered in Lisung hill fort and carved with ten Chons(寸)-smaller unit of Cheok and ten Chons are 23.7㎝. However, I think that it is required further research on when Han Cheok was disappeared, because it is an important issue related with the life span of Tang and Goguryeo Cheok.
Secondly, the studies on the volume and weight in ancient Korea have made a considerable progress with the discover of the unit volume - about 200㎖- and unit weight - similar with Han dynasty in China. However, the unit volume and weight had been changed on a certain point, but there are different opinions on the timeline. Nevertheless, considering that various wooden tablets are examined recently and there are still many chances to excavate measures of volume and weight, I think it is not far to meet a turning point of studies on this area.
