Every society consists of a family and it determines the health of whole society as a basic unit. In this vein, the academic communities usually pay a special attention to a family and try to develop various programs to make a healthier family, This endeavor becomes numerous whenever the change in a society affects a family in a negative way, Nowadays Korean society needs a spiritual and religious research aiming at recovering the identity of a Christian family within a rapidly changing society, I found out the spirituality, which Korean Christianity recently focuses, and spiritual education from Christian studies can provide an alternative perspective, However, there is a limitation of spiritual education, Even though there were some theoretical researches, there lacked theoretical approaches that focus on a family spiritual education. This research ultimately aims at developing a family spiritual education program and as a first step I examined a theoretical foundation of this program. This paper is composed in a following order, First, I examined the rapid social change and explained why it IS important to restore the family identity. In addition, I overviewed various approaches to help a family as well as some studies from Christian spiritual education. Second, I examined why it is important to focus on spirituality in a contemporary world. I overviewed theories of various scholars and explained why we should emphasize the spirituality in a family. The paramount reason for this is that a family is an arena where a spirituality of personal, interpersonal, and a broader social sphere can be met and balanced. Third, I will overview various theoretical approaches of spirituality from Christian education. Currently, there are four approaches to spirituality in Christian education approaches from developmental psychology, educational theology, religious tradition, and effective systems and methods for spiritual development. More recently, 'whole personal spirituality' which emphasizes discipleship, search for true self, service, whole personal meditation, and prayer and searches for a Christian spirituality that does not separate itself from everyday life, focuses on a family as a place where spiritual education takes place. Moreover, I will overview various programs including traditional programs and contemporary ones. Fourih, I will examine the theory of curriculum design according to four spiritual principles - principle of unity or wholeness, principle of sacrarnentality, principle of praxis, and principle of moreness. After constructing the curriculum according to a spiritual approach that is based on the abovementioned four principles, I reconstructed this according to goal/evaluation, contents, teacher-students and educational contexts. Then, I found out 3 guidelines required at the actual program development level. First, program needs to introduce several measurements and research instruments to evaluate the spirituality of each family. Second, program needs to set the goal and compare and contrast the merit and defects of the program compared to other similar programs. Third, program needs to detect the life cycle of a family and develop a task of spiritual development and program that can assist them Fifth, I overviewed some limitation of this research and suggested some further research questions.
