Researches for solar energy in Korea have begun after the first oil shock in early 1970' s. Since then several institutes conducted studies in small scale focused on solar energy use in buildings. However in-depth studies for escaping from energy crisis was conducted after establishment of the solar Energy Institute (SEI) in 1978.
More systematic studies and developments have been carried out in the Korea Institute of Energy and Resources (KIER) under the Government's support since 1980. KIER is the leading center for research and development of passive solar buildings. Main projects performed by KIER were as follows :
○ 1981 : Passive solar detached house
○ 1982 : Passive solar multi-family housing
○ 1983 : Passive solar classroom
○ 1984 : Passive solar swimming pool
○ 1985 : Passive solar apartment house
○ 1986 : Passive solar post office Development of hot water supply system (batch type)
○ 1989 : Development of thermosiphoning solar hot water supply system
○ 1990 : Passive solar dormitory
On the other hand, mainly basic subjects conducted at universities were as follows :
○ 1983: Development of prefabricated passive solar housing(Ⅰ)
○ 1985: Development of TAP(thermosiphoning air panel)
○ 1986: Development of prefabricated passive solar housing(Ⅱ)
○ 1986~1989: Building energy conservation strategies using passive solar system
○ 1989~1990: Design guidelines of daylight ing in office buildings
Education at university level for passive solar system was activated in late 1980' s and since 1990 Korean Solar Energy Society have offered passive solar competitions for students to promote student's motivation for solar energy utilization through building design.
○ The 1st competition, " Passive solar multi family housing " (1990)
○ The 2nd competition, " Art museum using daylighting " (1991)
○ The 3rd competition, " Building design using natural energy " (1992)
In Korea, the first passive solar house was built in 1979, And for several years after 1983, the number of passive solar houses annually constructed was over 300 with government subsidies. The trends of passive solar building construct ion have been declining with low oil prices as shown in Table 1. In 1990 the number was below 10.

Passive solar buildings have been focused mainly on detached houses and elementary school buildings in Korea. Direct gain system, Trombe wall and attached green house system are commonly used and other systems are hardly used.
In this paper, the program of passive solar building in the future has been introduced and the strategies for promoting the solar industry through R & D have been suggest ed.
