The source and motivation of pastoral care is the love of God. The Hebrew prophets had developed it to the concept of "cure of souls." The Christian ministry of pastoral care not only its warrant and energy from the risen Jesus but also its inspiration and imagery. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. The background of this Gospel description is the messianic idea of shepherding God's people. Jesus' whole life was a ministry of service. His disciples do what he has commanded: to love one another. Such love(agape) comes to expression within the Christian community in the manifold forms of pastoral care. Early Christian theology characterizes sickness and death as signs of the brokenness of God's good creation. Creation had lost its intended wholeness, or shalom. In contrast, healing and health were a restoration of God's intention. By the end of the eleventh century, Catholic Christianity was dominant in the life of Europe. Pastoral ministry centered on the power of divine grace to heal afflictions of body, mind, and spirit.
Protestants have frequently criticized the medieval pastoral tradition for its formalism. Martin Luther published a treatise on themes of pastoral care. Faithful preaching of the gospel, Ulrich Zwingli said, must be followed by faithful pastoral care. The Second Helvectic Confession by Heinrich Bullinger, a model of the Reformed pastor, has always enjoyed high regard among the Reformed churches. John Calvin insisted that the pastoral office has a double function preaching and encouraging of a life of holiness. In Scotland, John Knox's institutions for the visitation of the sick provided the model for all subsequent pastoral ministry in the Reformed churches. In the twentieth century the pastoral care movement is in many ways a ministry of reconciliation. This ministry of forgiveness and healing was entrusted to the church today from Jesus Christ.
