Nowadays, We can see some trials that adopt the historical perspective based on the post-modernism to the understanding and teaching of Korean history. They have criticized the ruling research trend as a out-of-dated style or a meaningless contents. I think we should listen to these criticism respectfully. But same time, I think those trials are not appropriate for Korean history.
The postmodernism wag originated in the tendency against the national design and control. In May 1968, France experienced a political and social upheaval that shook the regime to its foundations. Student unrest in the late 60's was a world-wide phenomenon, fuelled by American protests against U.S. involvement in Vietnam and by sympathy for Latin American revolutionaries such as Fidel Castro and Che Guevarra. In this social atmosphere, the postmodernism rose and became influential. As a result, the postmodernist lays emphasis upon the sovereign autonomous individual, and rejects the nationalㆍrational center-minded ideas. But this postmodern tendency, against its will, has contributed to widen the 'new economy' which threw the outside world of U.S. and Europe into poverty. So I think, in Korea, the postmodern historical perspective should reestimate the role of nation that the last one can resist the world capitalism.
Most historian of Korea have pursued the historical theme basing on so-called 'nationalism'. And there have been many critiques to this tendency. But I could see some paralogisms in those critiques. First, that was not the nationalism but the pseudo-nationalism. Second, what most historian of Korea pursued was the traditional thinking and method of historical understanding which has been succeeded from ancient society. We Korean could have maintained our sovereignity and cultural originality by this traditional understanding of history. Traditionally we have a historical viewpoint taking seriously other's specialty and variety, so put its emphasis on the peaceful coexistence as well as our nation's prosperity. I think it is a valuable subject that we should reform and develop the traditional historical perspective to the postmodern age's view.
