Looking forword national planning of Korea in 1990s, we expect some spatial changes in relation to urban spread of the Seoul metropolitan area, the new rapid railroad system, or industrial belt creation. Another new town construction eventually seems to be necessary since it is an alternative which lessens current urban problems and provides adequate urban environment for the inhabitants. In this respect it is one of urgent matters for planners to analyze purposes and development techniques of new towns built in industrialized countries and to compare the findings with those of ours.
Hence, the purpose of this study is to classify new towns developed after the Industrial Revolution by development purpose and to analyze various aspects of new town planning such as land use, characteristics of their spatial structure, physical planning. The findings of the research will provide policy makers with ample information and guidelines on the future development of new towns.
