The change of age structure is the index which explains the past trend and the future potential of population growth in each city or region. So the age structure is the basic in forecasting of population natural increase, and designing the socio-economic planning for preparing the need of education and health or demand of workers in each city or region. Since the 1960’s the age structure in Korea is changed by rapidly progressed population transition. And the city oriented population moving have been accelerated the difference in the change of age structure between regions.
The purposes of this study are the examination of the factors and the types of age structure changes in cities and the description of the relations of the population size change to age structure. First, as a natural factor, examine the change of the total age structure due to the decrease of fertility. Second, as a social factor, examine the type of regional age structure. Third, describe the characteristic between population inflow regions and outflow regions.
