Through analyzing five new towns adjacent to Seoul such as Bundang, Ilsan, Jungdong, Sanbon, and Pyungchon, this study suggests how the spatial pattern of Korea's neighborhood unit is and provides some references for neighborhood plans that will be projected by comparing with the overseas ones.
The result of this thesis can be summarized as follows.
Ⅰ. It can be guessed that a elementary school is considered as the most important institution in the neighborhood unit plan of town on the basis of the observation that the only elementary school is located in each neighborhood unit of all in comparison to other major institution's location.
Ⅱ. By studying overall eighty-six neighborhood units in the basis of clustering analysis. they were classified as two groups : they were also subclassified based on location of elementary schools. the access of facilities using pedestrian path, location of open space. and patterns of housing structure and neighborhood unit. In Korea's neighborhood unit classification. a factor of pattern of neighborhood unit influences on that classifying more or less.
Ⅲ. It seems like that usually elementary schools are positioned near the border of neighborhood unit rather than at the center of it. (case 1) (case 2.3,4)
Ⅳ. The patterns of neighborhood units generally squares except for neighborhood unit located at the outside. (case 4)
Ⅴ. All the patterns are projected to be accessible to pedestrian path.
Ⅵ. Korea's neighborhood unit does not have the space to function as a center of it compared with overseas ones which put together an elementary school. convenience facilities. and public transportation.
Ⅶ. This research reveals that compared with foreign neighborhood units which are planned to link roads as below, major road ⇒ collector road ⇒ local road ⇒ residence Korea's neighborhood unit road plans are not considered that way.
Ⅷ. According to this study. most neighborhood units allow areal penetration transportation. which is distinct from another countries' ones that exclude penetration transportation by cul-de-sac system.
Ⅸ. Almost all housing patterns are projected as shared housing. except for the pattern located at the outside(case4) among overall patterns of neighborhood unit. This is because it can solve the shortage of houses. Thus. neighborhood unit became a high dense area. This causes the deficiency of space functioning as a canter. penetration-transportation permission. and absence of gradual road plan finally.
