In Korean shamanism ① the people's attitude towards the gods during the religious ceremonies and formalities isn't sincere or solemn.
② The shamans who perform the roles of gods and carrying out the ceremony are otherwise treated with contempt; outside the ceremony, they are treated as the lowest possible social class.
③ While performing the actual ritual, these shamans don't go to the gods, instead they call gods to come to their ground.
④ During the ceremony, gods most often appear in official uniforms which represent bureaucrats of the Chosun(Lee Dynasty) era.
⑤ During the ceremony, music, dance, plays and foods are always included; these are provided not only for the chief deities who are invited as the guests of honor but also the miscellaneous gods and the deads' souls.
⑥ In terms of the content of the ritual, 'kut', the act of sending away all gods who are gathered in the place of an exorcist is considered as important as the summoning of the gods, an act with includes inviting the gods, telling them the human-beings' entreaties and receiving the gods' answers in accordance with the dramatic scenarios.
⑦ The nature of the gods is not strictly polarized between good and evil, but rather, the gods all exhibit traits which may be both good and evil. Therefore, to understand these facts, first of all it should be kept in mind the fact that Korean shamanism is a religious and cultural phenomenon formed on the basis of realistic and humanistic thoughts and sense of value.
The method of interaction between human beings and gods can be much more simply explained not in religious terms but in social or educational meanings. The way of dealing with gods produced by the shaman in kut shows the very way of Korean people's transaction with the government authority in this society through the past.
