The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 6-month weight loss program on visceral fat accumulation and aerobic capacity in post-menopausal women. Eighteen middle-aged women, aged 52.9±2.8 years, who had not exercised regularly, volunteered to participate in the present study as subjects. They completed a 6-month weight loss program consisting of aerobic exercise performed two times/week, for 60 min/session at lactate threshold level. For the period, they had a low-calorie diet, i.e., 1,532±221 ㎉/day. The visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area were estimated at the umbilicus by the computed tomography. The measurement variables included fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. Exercise time, energy expenditure during exercises, and energy intake before and after the intervention were determined based on the self-reports. VO₂max increased by 3.2 ㎖/㎏/min (11.4%) and VFA decreased by 27.5 ㎠; (39%). The changes were statistically significant. The change rates of the two variables were correlated not significantly (r=0.274).
It was concluded that the 6-month supervised weight loss program was effective not only for the reduction in VFA but also for improvement of aerobic capacity, suggesting that VFA besides to VO₂max should be evaluated for the exercise prescription in post-menopausal women.
