This study was designed to clarify an association of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism with bone strength, body composition and basal physical fitness in college students. We determined the ACE genotype using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), in a DNA sample of 310 healthy male and female college students aged 21.1 ± 2.5 yrs. The genetic subtype was classified by its digestion patterns e.g. DD, ID, Ⅱ, and then bone strength and basal physical fitness were compared among genotype. Finally 84 college students of 45 male and 39 female took part in this study, for the genotype distribution, 26.2%(n=17) were DD genotype, 54.8%(n=46) were ID genotype and 20.2%(n=22) were II genotype, respectively. The body weight, height, BMI, %Fat and LBM, in female, were significantly lower than those of male(p<0.001, respectively). OSI, TI and SOS, reflecting bone strength, of female were also significantly lower than those of male(p<0.001, respectively). The grip strength, back strength and sit-up time, reflecting basal physical fitness, of female were also significantly lower than those of male(p<0.001, respectively). Futhermore, the sit-up, indicating muscle endurance, of Ⅱ genotype in male was significantly higher than that of other genotype (p<0.05). OSI, TI and SOS, reflecting bone strength, of ID genotype in male was significantly lower than those of other genotype (p<0.05).
These results suggest that ACE genotype might be used as a predictor which may affect bone mineral density and muscle endurance fucntion in Korean college students.
