The purpose of this study is to discover universal tendencies applied to the column spacing of wooden architecture with multiple bracket sets in the Joseon Dynasty period. 70 buildings were selected for this study. And the number and the length of the bay were compared and analysed. The results of this study are described like below. The floor planning of the Dapo-type architecture was not made in the only consideration of geometrical proportion, but it was decided in consideration of various factors, such as the purpose, the framed structure, the materials of the building, and the financial conditions of that time. The adaptability of bay, which is based on the number of the bay free from the length concept, was applied to the floor planning.
The three-bay-square buildings maintained the high ratio of application at all times, especially more than 50% since 1700. But buildings with more than four bays were decreased gradually. 5×2 bays type which was applied to multistoried gate building had an average mark of 0.34 in the ratio of lateral to longitudinal length. There is a tendency that the multistoried building with more than five bays changed into the single-story building which has three bays in the longitudinal direction. In general, the total length of longitudinal direction was longer than that of lateral direction in the floor plan of the Dapo-type building. And the ratio of lateral to longitudinal length was 10:7 in average. The length of the bay is set up by the order of Oekan(御間) ≥ Hyupkan(夾間) ≥ Toikan(退間) in the longitudinal direction, Jungangkan(中央間) ≥ hyupkan(夾間) ≥ Toikan(退間) in the lateral direction, and Oekan(御間) ≥ Jungangkan(中央間) in the building. The most important reason why the length of each bay is set up differently is to emphasize the central part of the building.
