The institution of the emperor in Japan has existed with a different, unique character at each period when we review through her history. however, the essentialities of having existed such an system has not changed at all, while they has developed in a dialectical way. Although the characters the institution of the emperor has held might differ from one another from ancient period and middle age to modern times, the symbolic role of the emperor having performed has developed with a very high political significance responding to such a thing according to the mobility by need of political authority pertaining to each period. The development of the symbolic role of the emperor like that could be possible because the institution of the emperor has carried out actively the role of ideological equipment which can legalize and rationalize all right in responding of the pertinent period of each political phase. Therefore, the symbolic role of the emperor was based on the mobility of reproduction becoming possible by need of the political authorities which was grasping hegemony during each period, and also was placed in correlation of such an political ones. It means that the symbolic role of the institution of the emperor is not to be fixed, unchanged and transcended, but to be centripetal and unified to merely the ruling forces who were coming into power at each age. That is, the institution of the emperor has been not to play a symbolic role of the unification of the japanese people from below but to perform the very one of the unification from above as a representative of the ruling political authorities, and is carrying out a role like that now as well.
