I surveyed 100 each of Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese Students studying Japanese language to find out the differences of their perception on Japanese culture.
The survey consisted of the following questions.
1. What do you think of the word ‘Japan’?
2. Is there anything that you do in your daily life related to Japan or the Japanese language? If yes, then what is it?
3. what do you know about Japan in terms of
1) modern fashions and hairstyles of Japanese young people
2) animation and comic of Japan
3) Japan’s Game
4) Japan’s Pop
5) slingshot(pachinko) of Japan
6) Imperial House of Japan
7) Kimono
8) Sumo
4. What are the characteristics of the Japanese people?
5. What do you want to introduce from your culture to foreign students around your age?
6. What do you want to know about Japan?
7. Can your interest in Japan make your Japanese ability and knowledge better?
I found out that in general there were differences between the reputation of Japanese students on their own culture and the reputation of Korean and Taiwanese Students on Japanese culture as a foreign culture. While Korean and Taiwanese students perceived pop and modern aspects of Japanese culture, Japanese students emphasized the traditional aspects. Modern and traditional cultures ways of thanks, manners were evaluated differently. All the students surveyed had rather a positive reputation of the Japanese modern culture. In questions 5 and 6, students answered similarly. Korean and Taiwanese students answered that they wanted to know about fashion, animated films, school life of teenagers and traditional things like customs, way of thing, manners food and housing in Japan. Likewise, Japanese students mentioned they wanted to introduce the same things to foreign students.
It can be inferred that accepting culture as another concept and accepting it as a part of their life are quite different according to answers to the questions. In case of primary and secondary education students are not exposed to the Japanese people and culture w, therefore it’s important for a teacher to give information or let students research on the culture. Also It’s useful to give students information about contemporary students of the given culture so they can have realistic feelings and thoughts about it. Japanese education should aim to let students know what others think of us objectively and find ways to improve our culture.
