Missionaries were, during the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea, some of the most prolific writers on Korea and things Korean. Those who worked, in various capacities, for the Chosen Christian College(“Yeonhi Jeonmun”) and the Severance Medical College were no exception in this regard. They were, in fact, in a better position than others for the examination of Korea; they were academically qualified, their works at schools required for a better understanding of things Korean, they were surrounded by stimulating peers, and they could utilize some of the finest research facilities available at that time. Besides, missionaries were exempt from various political disadvantages that hampered Korean intellectual activities.
A survey of writings on Korea by missionaries at the Chosen Christian College and the Severance Medical College reveals that they touched almost all subjects of so-called Korean Studies. Some of the writings, especially those published in the Transactions of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, were serious academic works, but others were casual. Missionaries were, since the opening of Korea in the late nineteenth century, some of the pioneers in the study of the Korean language. This tradition continued in this period; able linguists of the two schools such as James S. Gale and H. H. Underwood revised earlier dictionaries, wrote new grammars and helpful drill texts. Some missionaries did serious researches on such diverse Korean topics as history, ancient culture(either material or intangible), customs, religion, geography, and ecology. More often than not their studies were pioneering Western (or modern) studies in the given field. In addition, the Research Department of the Severance Medical College, funded many scientific studies on diseases and living conditions in Korea. Like other pioneering studies these researches also proved to be pathfinders of modern Korean studies.
Although missionaries dealt with most fields of Korean studies, the absence of any serious writings on politically sensitive subjects such as contemporary Korean politics and economy is unmistakably obvious. Upon writing about Korea missionaries devoted their pages solely on the humanist-cultural topics. The reason behind their silence on socio-political matters is quite apparent. Missionaries were allowed by the Japanese to undertake their religious-vocational activities on the condition that they acknowledge the powers that be, namely, the Japanese colonial regime. This was not a puzzling demand-many missionaries welcomed the Japanese and their theology taught a strict separation of church and state. Moreover, their home country warned them not to get involved in Korean politics. These circumstances made their Korean studies distinguishable from those by Korean nationalists as well as those carrying Japanese imperialist motives.
