Since Park Jae-Sam appeared in the literary world with a Korean verse, and his poems reflect strong traditional emotion, his poetic world has often been described as focusing on ‘lamentation(han:恨)’ and ‘tears’ or ‘traditional lyricism’. However, the object of ‘lamentation’ and ‘tears’ or the subject of ‘traditional lyricism’ is a significantly abstract concept, and it is hard to explain the character of his poems. This study is to review the characteristic aspect of the poems of Park Jae-Sam who formalized his original poetical sentiment while contemplating the object of nature with the phase of life, assuming that the most important motif in his poems is nature.
The centric object of his poems is nature. Park Jae-Sam expresses the move of his mind and shows an emotional response about the way of living through nature. In either case, he does not mention nature directly nor expose his emotion directly, thus even the shorter poem looks complicated in its combination of nature and emotion. His poems pursue the condensation of meaning while commuting two points based on the axis of nature and that of mind, and the expansion of meaning toward another area.
In the life full of poverty and disease, Park Jae-Sam writes poems about the confession of a victimized feeling as a human, and about dreaming of a miraculous future. Through these steps, his nature is established as a space of revelation that maintains an everlastingly innocent property. Nature that has the dual meaning of sorrow and joy attains the stage of obtaining the foresight of life through the beauty of new birth. Such a philosophical attitude does not appear in his poems very often. Nevertheless, as the flow of sad but pure emotion in his early poems leads to the adoration of the innocence of a child, it was possible to clearly see the positive attitude about life.
He did not separate nature from life, but observed and contemplated both in their mutual relationship. He tried to sublimate and overcome the pain of life through the beauty of nature upon the mutually dependent world view. It is a characteristic which is discovered in traditional lyric poems in common, to contemplate in relation to nature and life. However, Park Jae-Sam overcame the simplicity and schema of traditional lyric poems by independently observing and contemplating nature and life from the mutually dependent perspective which sees nature and life more closely attached.
