This article is to investigate how the Protestant fundamentalism, as one of essential elements of the so-called 'Americanism', can be reviewed as a politico-religious background of the emerging somewhat 'facist tendency' of contemporary American society. First of all, we need to indicate some prominent features of American society which can be properly classified as typical symtoms of 'facism', which is arguably not just short-lived social phenomenon within the late 20th century European interwar period; then, re-characterize them concerning their historical interconnection with American conservatism, whose religious root is still in Protestant evangelism. In American context, the sweeping revivalism has shown a remarkable shift of gospel message, i.e., from its primitive other-worldly orientation to the later holistic one, e.g., particularly as well represented through the American 'perfectionism', to the effect that it seems nearly difficult to distinguish the American civil religion from the developed American version of puritanism. Secondly, therefore, if American civil religion is also to be reviewed as a religious phenomenon, at least as a ramification of earlier puritanism, it is quite possible to investigate how it develops 'back' into American fundamentalism, strongly functioning to reshape and justify the contemporary conservativeness (extreme right-winged trend) of Americanism. This is, therefore, a critical approach to the dual character of Americanism, as the typical union between the non-political, evangelical character on the one hand, and the political, secular movement on the other, as it has emerged prominently as the 'perfectionism' in the course of permutations from the primitive religious one to a secular ideology.
