This article attempts to analyze the ideologies of the integration in modem German history. Since the massive modernization Germany invented a myth about the cultural and ethnic homogeneity of the German nation that characterized the German nationalism for a long time. After the Second World War the nationalism - or more precisely the ethnic nationalism - played no longer the same role in Germany. Because of the German disaster that the nazism as the radical nationalism had triggered, the nationalism lost its appeal in the Federal Republic of Germany. At first glance it seems as if the Federal Republic of Germany became a post-national society.
A new Ideology for the post-national society of FRG was the constitutional patriotism or post-national democracy. Nevertheless, the tradition of the ethnic nationalism survived in the FRG. This applies also in the case of the multi-cultural challenge. Germany recently accepted the reality of a country of immigration and strived to design a new approach to the multi-cultural society. In spite of that Germany still holds on the integration policies of the nation-state which bases on the tradition of the ethnic nationalism as a mechanism for social inclusion and exclusion. One explanation for the persistence of national integration concept is that all ideologies of the integration in German history have the same driving force, namely a specific passion for the hegemonic state in the modem world system.
