The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of the South Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on South Korea's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into China. For this, the paper first researched the characteristics of trade between South Korea and China and the status of South Korea's FDI in China. The research of South Korea's FDI in China isdivided into two parts, manufacturing and service sectors. The paper also forecasts the expected changes of South Korea's FDI in China after the conclusion of the FTA between the two countries.
This paper hypothesizes that inflows of South Korea's FDI into China's manufacturing sector will gradually moderate in the coming period due to the localization of the Chinese manufacturing industry and reduced effectiveness of tariff benefits after the FTA is implemented. In the service sector, on the other hand, this paper assumes that South Korea's FDI in China may provide South Korea more profits and accelerate South Korea's FDI inflows into China once South Korea has an advantage over China in the FTA negotiations. China's reforms of its industrial structures from a manufacturing-oriented to a service-oriented model will also provide advantages to South Korea. In order to prove these hypotheses and present the conclusion, the paper analyzes conditions of South Korea's investment in China's manufacturing and service industries based on statistical data.
The paper notes that the financial industry is going to be one of the most important sectors in the South Korea-China FTA. Due to this importance, the paper suggests different strategies to the three separate financial industries - banking, insurance and securities- in preparation for South Korea-China FTA negotiations. South Korea may obtain large benefits from South Korea-China FTA if South Korea is able to capitalize off advantages in the service sector in return for concessions in the manufacturing sector.
