Recently David Harvey's theory of space has gained great attention from social sciences and humanities, as capitalist space has been radically reconfigured and intricately reconnected on the global scale. Space in his theory is conceptualized in terms of three category of space, that is, absolute, relative, and relational, and correlated with Lefebvre's typology of space, that is, material space, representation of space and representational space. As this ideal-type conceptualization of space appears to be highly difficult to be understood, a new typology of space is suggested; that is, material, geometrical, a priori, social, and practical (inter-) space. Harvey's theory of space has taken an initiative of development of Western geography since the 1960s, in particular from positivist, Marxist, and postmodern geography, and has provided a highly keen insight into neoliberal globalization with the new imperialism of the United State, suggesting noble alternatives to it. Indeed, his critical work on neoliberal globalization has developed on the basis of two highly significant concepts, that is, 'spacial fix' and 'accumulation by dispossession' to analyze the neoliberalization process of current capitalism and to refute neoliberalism as an ideology of ruling class. Seen mainly from these two concepts, Harvey argues, the process of neoliberal globalization is a project of a certain class and/or region's project for restoration of power. In recent years, this process of neoliberal globalization has encountered with serious limitations, and hence has bring about anti-neoliberal and anti-globalization movements. Harvey understands such world-widely occurring movements as one against accumulation by dispossession. In particular, according to him, the financial crisis in the U.S. at the end of 2007 and the depression of world economy since then have been brought about as surplus capital which has been accumulated since the 1970s could not be absorbed into urban built environments due to ever-increasing polarization of urban dwellers. Thus, Harvey argues, the concept of 'the right to the city' and urban social movements for it is emphasized in a sense that urban citizens should have the right and freedom to make and remake our cities and ourselves, controlling absorbing process of social surplus.
