The education of ecological poetry should be emphasized in high schools. The first reason is that the education of ecological poetry satisfies the goal of literature education, “to understand mankind and the world in general”. Today, the most important thing among “understandings in general” of “mankind and the world” is the crisis of the earth caused by the pollution of the ecosystem. Secondly, the education of ecological poetry accords with the ultimate goal of students" education, enhancement of human ethics. In today’s reality of materialistic and self centered desire being reinforced day by day, the education of virtues is very important, which accords with the
ecological principles.
In order to educate students effectively in ecological poetry, suitable texts need to be selected that accord with the spirit of the age. The point to be considered first of all in selecting texts is diversity of theme consciousness. The texts to be utilized in ecological poetry education need to be constituted with books of poetry fundamentally based on criticism of modern civilization. Specifically, poems that accuse ecological pollution and corruption of humanity, Now, This Land Is Not Only Decaying and Bammaru Dock Of Nakdong River by Kyung lim Shin, poems that enhance ecological consciousness by discovering principles of the nature and the universe, Nature Library, Cuckoo in Upo Swamp by Han bong Bae, poems that prospect for an ecological paradise by recognizing the ecological crisis, Fermentation, Manure by Seung ho Choi need to be selected equally.
The selected works should realize open texts. Teachers should present diversly other works related to the selected texts as interactive texts as well as the selected texts and students should take them as motives for global ecological awareness and practise by appreciating the texts deeply and extensively.
