This study aims to investigate the relationship between subjective job stresses and objective job workload. Background: Job Stress is one of the most important factors induces musculoskeletal system disorder and reduces job performance. Previous researches focused on the job stress itself, the relationship between job stress and job performance. However the relationship between job stress and objective workload was not studied yet, especially for manufacturing industry. Method: Total 125 processes of 3 departments at automobile factory were investigated to understand the relationship between subjective job stresses and objective job workload. 3 departments whose average workload might be considered to be different were selected among 7 departments. Based on the characteristics of the work process, proper checklists for evaluating objective workload were used and the interview with workers was done to evaluate job stress. Correlation analysis was performed to grasp the level of relationship and compare the level between departments. Results: The correlation between objective workload and job stress is positive. The correlation coefficients of 3 departments are 0.361, 0.328 and 0.063 respectively. Conclusion: Correlation between job stress and objective workload is generally positive, and becomes small as objective workload increases. Application: The results of this study can be used to the find the relationship between characteristics of the process and job stress. Thus characteristics of the process and job environment which cause job stress.
