The purpose of this research was to seek out the relations between a mother"s method of discipline and the child"s social and emotional competence. The respondent of 153 mothers having 3-year-olds, and 162 mothers having 5-year-olds, living in G city were joined. Judither Christopher(2002)"s method was used for the determination of mothers" discipline method. Also, for the determination of the teachers" discipline method, 55 teachers of those children were joined as the respondent. La Freniere and Dumpas method(1996) was used for the determination of children"s social and emotional competence. For the analysis of data, Two-way ANOVA and Pearson"s difference between boys and girls in anxiety. Third, there was a relation between 3 and 5 year older boys" anger ? aggression and mothers" mode of psycho-regulatory rearing discipline and children"s social competence, 3 and 5 year girls" social and emotional competence had relation with mothers" supportive discipline. According to these results, we can know that not only age and gender but also mothers" mode of rearing was an important variable in promoting. social and emotional competence. Expecting more progressive studies for the measurement of early children"s social and emotional competence, the systematic programs that can develop social and emotional competence. That is, the program classified by ages and situations are needed to be developed by implementing qualitative researches.
