This work experimentally investigates DME-Diesel blended fuel influences combustion characteristics and emissions(NOx, CO, HC, Smoke) in a single-cylinder DI diesel engine. The volume ratios for DME and diesel are 5:95 and 10:90 respectively and the both ratios have been used altogether in blended fuel. DME as an alternative fuel has been actively discussed for clean combustion and low exhaust emission in a compression ignition engine. DME is possible to operate by diesel cycle in a compression ignition engine because high cetane number and low ignition temperature. The low boiling point of DME fuel evaporates quickly when liquid-phase DME spray is injected into the engine cylinder. as a result, it can lead to better mixing with the air in the engine cylinder. For combustion performance of the DME, smokeless combustion can be expected, because of its high oxygen content (around 35% by mass) and the absence of C-C bonds in its molecular structure. On the other hand, DME requires a higher injected mass to obtain the same amount of energy as the diesel fuel, because of its lower density and combustion enthalpy. In this study single cylinder engine was equipped with common rail and injection pressure is 700 bar at 1200 rpm. The amount of injected fuels is adjusted to obtain the fixed IMEP as 5~5.5 bar in order to compare with the fuel conditions. DME is compressed to 15 bar by nitrogen gas thus it can be maintained the liquid phase.
