As recently excavation for various relics of Goryeo ~ Chosun has been actively proceeded, many relics are being poured. Everyone knows that pottery accounts for large portion. But studies on porcelain such as celadon, Buncheong sagi, white porcelain are active however, there has been few interest in stoneware. It would be clear that many stonewares were excavated from many relics but preliminary collection of data is not easy because researchers have not been interested in pottery.
This study is a trial to seek a right position for stoneware which is not clear in its real entity, although they are excavated much. The author was anxious to know how contemporary people of Goryeo ~ Chosun recognized pottery and what they called it - nowadays pottery is distinguished from porcelain. In addition, the author doubted if it is reasonable to call pottery normally. To solve this question to some degree, the author arranged examples about term for pottery(瓦器), stoneware(陶器), and Onggi(甕器) shown on literature records, investigated their meanings, and tried to figure out correlation between them.
As a result of arranging examples of pottery, stoneware, and Onggi shown on literature records, followings could be known. First, it can be known that the term of pottery was for Goryeo stoneware that we now call until Goryeo dynasty. And it was identified that pottery was used as a concept distinguished from porcelain and ware. Second, it was figured out that three terms of pottery, stoneware, and Onggi were used together in Chosun dynasty. As a result of checking various exampleseach vessel, it was known that name of pottery was used to disclose material, Onggi was widely used by being connected to words expressing size or use, stoneware included these two while indicating name different from porcelain in quality. Base on these facts, it would be most proper to see that name of vessel for one group distinguished from porcelain among name of vessel from Goryeo to Chosun is ’stoneware(陶器)’. And it is actively suggested to use this term in the future.
