Architects can develop their careers not only in the field of architecture and design, but also in a wide range of fields such as law, management, science, and engineering. Recently, while many other disciplines innovate themselves to survive in the extremely competitive environment, the discipline of architectural design sometimes lets itself behind the fast changing world. However, if the work process just follow a conventional method without innovation, the discipline would belong to another innovative field. Thus, I propose two approaches to expand the careers of professionals in the field of architectural design in Korea as an innovative discipline. First, the discipline of architectural design, if it continues to innovate itself and integrate various advanced technologies into its expertise, will be able to play a leading role in the field of built environment than any other. In the United States, academic institutions of architectural design lead to promote innovation and diversity. Schools allow people with various backgrounds to participate in their architectural program, and their curriculum continues to integrate other disciplines into their core design courses. They are researching a new form and logic of architectural design rather than following a conventional method. Second, there are various opportunities for more, if the individual actively works in a foreign country, companies challenge new regions, and a great deal of research is conducted beyond the boundaries of Korea, specializing in architectural design. Now people easily access in real time to what is going on in the world. However, if professionals in the field of architectural design remain only one region, they probably make the mistake of limiting themselves without adopting a new advanced technology and of missing more opportunities. Opportunities favor those who are prepared, yet those who step forward create the opportunity. Nowadays students choose a major in architectural design because they can creatively improve and contribute to the quality of the built environment in which people live. If more people utilize the latest technology in terms of design, engineering and research, continuously integrate various perspectives into their expertise and work in more countries, the discipline of architectural design will be strengthened to be creative indeed rather than labor-intensive. This self-innovation can empower professionals in the architecture discipline to creatively improve our daily lives and places.
