The purpose of this study was to examine heroic novels contained in textbooks and the shifts of heroic novels in textbooks in accordance with the change of the national curriculums. Heroic novels contained in textbooks were explained from two different perspectives: the type of novel and cultural history. By type, heroic novels contained in textbooks were categorized into four. One was heroic novels, and another was war novels. The third was a combination of heroic and war novels, and the fourth was novels that described heroines. In terms of cultural history, the circulation and popularity of heroic novels were explained. There were different explanations even on the same work according to the time of textbook publication and studies whose findings were reflected in textbooks, and it’s because heroic novels were contained in textbooks on a selective basis after the findings of studies on heroic novels were verified for a certain period of time. Accordingly, discreet and efficient textbook compilation is important, and prolonged research efforts should be channeled into that. The findings of studies should be verified, and textbooks should be prepared based on the findings of studies that have fully been confirmed.
