This article explores both continuity and discontinuity in the transition of palace medical departments during the period between the early Tang and the Tiansheng reign of the Song Renzong. First of all, we need to carefully compare the function of which the Medical Bureau for Emperor had been in charge since the office was first established during the early Tang period with that of the Hanlin Medical Officials which was established during the late Tang and existed during the Tiansheng reign. Therefore, the comparison of these two palace medical departments of different time periods makes us recognize which functions the later department inherited from the former one and which ones were newly created by the later one. The creation of a new office of Hanlin Medical Officials in the government organization during the late Tang period, however, brought about significant changes in the system of palace medical departments. Under the provision concerning the palace medical departments in the Tiansheng Statutes, the Hanlin Medical Officials were in charge of not only the existing functions for which the Medical Bureau for Emperor had been responsible but also additional jobs such as treating high-ranking officials’ disease, selecting new medical officials, and even producing and supplying medicine to ordinary people. Therefore, the Hanlin Medical Officials combined the roles of the existing palace medical department with that of national central medical institution. Although the Northern Song government still retained the Medical Bureau for the Emperor within its bureaucracy system, it had smaller scale than it used to have during the Tang period. Consequently, unlike the early Tang system, the palace medical department that used to be designed exclusively for Emperor was no longer in existence during the Tiansheng reign of the Song Renzong.
