Chan Chung and Jong-Bok Kim. 2007. Phrasal Verb Constructions in English: A Lexicalist Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-2, 189-212. English phrasal verb construction displays complex syntactic distributions. This paper provides a lexical analysis on the construction with the assumption that transitive phrasal verbs are classified into two different types, i.e., a type with a predicative particle and the other type with a non-predicative idiomatic particle. With the supposition of a lexical rule that can switch the obliqueness of the particle and the direct object NP, the paper introduces the PRED and LEX features within the framework of HPSG. This approach allows us to offer a streamlined analysis for various properties of the construction such as particle shift, particle modification, coordination, lexical idiosyncrasies, and so forth.
