Sports events hosted by local governments have positive influences on the enhancement of the local image as well as local economic development. Indiscretion in sports events, however, has the potential to cause many problems in addition to a blow to local economy. This study thus set out to analyze problems with indiscreet of sports events by local governments and search for ways to resolve them. There are several problems with local governments’ sports events: first, excessive budgets result in a waste of taxpayers’ precious money. Second, there is the shortage of voluntary participation and interest on the part of local resident. Third, the performance of domestic players falls. Fourth, sports events are hosted with the local characteristics ignored. Fifth, there is a lack of experts on sports event management. Finally, infrastructure is built by giving no consideration to the utilization plans of stadium after the event. The above-mentioned problems can be solved by hosing such an event with low costs and high efficiency and developing a range of programs to induce voluntary participation and interest from local residents. It is also needed to lavish supports and investments on the domestic players of the hosted game for improved performance and bring up experts to host and manage sports events. Finally, infrastructure should be built by taking into account the utilization plans of stadium after the event rather than taking it as an investment for the event. Today it seems irrational for a local government to host a sports event indiscreetly under the pretext of local development. It is time to think what should be a priority for local development.
