On May 18th, 1980, a civilians’ uprising broke out against South Korean airborne troops because of their brutal suppression in Gwangju (광주), Jeollanam-do (전라남도) between May 18th-20. civilians joined a protest started by students. Because troops fired on and killed many Gwangju citizens they took up arms to defend themselves, to maintain order, and became a civil-military army (시민군). The armed civilian rising ended during a subjugation operation at dawn on May 27th, but their resistance and struggle to defend themselves and democracy sparked the foundation and development of democracy for all of South Korea.
