On 16 April 2014, about 304 passengers of the sinking ferry Sewol died while they were waiting for rescue in passenger cabins following the public announcement of sailors. This disaster took place by corrupted people in the wealth-pursuing survival society which follows neo-liberal economics. Cheonghaejin Marine Company bought an 18 year old ferry from Japan (the government’s deregulation made it possible) and modified it adding extra passenger cabins. (It was named Sewol.) As a result the ship’s center of gravity rose 51 cm. On such a ship, cargo was overloaded about three times whereas the ballast water was filled only 29 %. By a sudden turn during the voyage, the ship lost balance and began to sink. The sailors were rescued whereas the passengers were forced to remain in passenger cabins by the public announcement. As a result a lot of passengers lost the opportunity of being rescued. They were victims of corrupted wealth-pursuing society and egoistic sailors. If our society had pursued justice instead of wealth according to the Synoptic Gospels (Matt 6:33), the Sewol ferry disaster may not have happened. If our society had valued life more than wealth (Mark 10:21), such a disaster may not have taken place.
