In the last three decades, most immigration to Taiwan has been through cross-border marriage, and most (90%) of the people who have immigrated through cross-border marriage have been women. Although new immigrants are now the fifth largest group in Taiwan, they have made large contributions to Taiwan society and to their families in Taiwan. However, mainstream society still has a negative stereotype of new immigrants. Discrimination occurs in daily life. Even governmental systems and policies may not treat new immigrants fairly. These phenomena impact the daily experience of new immigrants and the enforcement of their rights.
This article is the product of studies by the author during 2009-2013. It describes the challenges and stigma experienced by new immigrants from Southeast Asia and Mainland China after entering Taiwan through cross-border marriage. These new immigrants gathered to fight against the stigma. Finally, the anti-oppressive practice of the community-based immigration services is discussed.
