This thesis gives attention to two sides of widely discussed multi-cultural phenomena. One is about the multi-cultural reconstruction of nation state, and the other is about breaking the views of nation state to multi-cultural phenomena. In particular, this thesis analyzes the Japanese government"s responses to recent multi-cultural situation, and it propose a new perspective to the multi-cultural phenomena.
Although it deals with the Ainu as a indigenous people, this thesis dose not seek their nationality or right itself. Rather the goal is to critically examine the following three points. First, the thesis analyzes the theoretical similarities between assimilation policy and multi-cultural symbiosis policy, which have examined through historical reviews of the Japanese government"s Ainu policy. Second, is the the thesis critically analyzes the logic of ‘multi-cultural reconstruction of nation state’, which refers to the Japanese government"s acceptance of Ainu indigeneity under the slogan of ‘multi-cultural symbiosis’. Third, it analyzes the recognition of indigenous people"s rights based on the perspective of the modern nation state for the realization of true multi-cultural symbiosis.
