In the history of Jewish religion for about three thousand years, Judaism changed its characteristics from the religion of sacrifices to the religion of the divine law, the Halakhah in Hebrew. This change has happened in the first two centuries of the Common Era and the new form of Judaism has been called the Rabbinic Judaism or the Normative Judaism. Based upon the covenant with the Supreme God, Jewish sages developed the theories of two mode of revelation of the divine Law, i.e. the Written Torah and the Oral Torah, and compiled the law code named the Mishnah in about 200 CE, which gave rise to the typical Jewish way of life.
In this paper the author defined the Rabbinic Judaism as an official religion, analyzed its characteristics and then made clear the collisions which the rabbinic Judaism faced in the modern era beginning with the French Revolution. Bestowed civil rights, Jews became citizens of the modern nation states but this new situation brought forth many problems concerning Jewish identities in the modern world. Two typical responses are analyzed. On the one hand Jews in the western civil society chose to assimilate themselves into the given society but endeavored to keep their identity in reshaping Judaism according to the modern conditions. On the other, some East-European Jews cherished the Zionism and built the new Jewish nation- state and most Oriental Jews came to live in Israel after the nation-state was built. And then the new problems of the Jewish religion and the secular state have emerged.
