The purpose of this study was to review the relationship between leadership type and satisfaction and team effectiveness on athletes. The existing similar leadership researches were the studies on team games, but this study is focused on athletic sports which are individual events. Leadership which is used in this study by independent variable types are classified into innovative leadership, task-oriented leadership, bureaucratic leadership, and participative leadership types. Team effectiveness goes up or down depending upon the leader`s satisfaction and dissatisfaction with sports life. Sports performance is effected by the number of awarded prizes. The subjects(n=394) were randomly selected from the athletes of high school and university teams as well as several business teams who participated in the national contest of the Koreans Amateur Athletics Federation(K.A.A.F) in May 1998. The gathered, data of subjects was analyzed. The Factor Analysis Method was used in order to inspect the factor structure of each variable. Cronbach`s a factor was calculated to analyze the reliability on questionnaires. The Correlation Analysis Method and Multiple Regression Analysis Method were employed. The results are as follows : 1) Innovative leadership, participative leadership and task-oriented leadership types were positively correlated with satisfaction on athletes, but bureaucratic leadership was negatively correlated. 2) Innovative leadership, task-oriented leadership and participative leadership types were positively correlated with team effectiveness, but bureaucratic leadership was negatively correlated. 3) In the relationship between leadership types and satisfaction, innovative leadership and participative leadership types has significantly positive influence on satisfaction on athletes. 4) In the relationship between leadership types and team effectiveness, participative leadership and innovative leadership types has a significantly positive influence on team effectiveness
