The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Aesthetics of Reception-a theory of reading which has been developed by H. Jauss and W. Iser in Germany-can contribute into the Old Testament studies. To do so, first, it indicates its social and philosophical background, reviewing the philosophical hermeneutics of H. Gadamer and the phenomenological reading theory of R. Ingarden. Second, it presents reading theories of H. Jauss and W. Iser as well as some reader response critics in the United States. Third, it applies into the Old Testament interpretation its major concepts, including reception history, the implied reader, filling the gap, imagination, experience, pre -understanding. This study argues that the Aesthetics of Reception, which emphasizes both the structure of the text and the function of the reader, is a useful tool to explain how the Old Testament text becomes God`s living word through reading of its reader, even though the theory was established to explain the reading of the fictional literature. It presents that the Old Testament interpretation should seriously consider the interpretive tradition, and the pre-understanding and imagination of its real readers, which has been ignored by its historical criticism. It also presents that the theory can be applied to explain the Bible translation theory, the traditio -historical criticism, the history of biblical interpretation, and biblical interpretations in the contextual theologies. However, this study indicates that readers should critically self-reflect, and have a deconstructionistic attitude for the content of the text and its interpretive tradition, in order to make it a useful tool for biblical studies.
