Historically, technological innovation has been always a precondition of novel design in architecture. Today’s digital technologies are expanding the scopes of architectural design tools from technical tools for efficient representation to indispensable means for a new type of geometry, by extension, to logical algorithms for process of designing a design. These movements toward digital era are changing the design process and methods of design, as well as the final products fundamentally in contemporary architecture.
In this article, we are introducing our experimental project which is using the cutting-edge digital technologies in all design phases from the preliminary design to final construction details. And we are trying to discuss the performances and missions that we found from this project. As a summery, the project shows the form-finding process using abiogenic methods, and polygonal paneling methods with planarization in free-form shell structure. Furthermore, it presents new possibilities in terms of optimization process of construction by using the digital fabrication. Especially, every design process in this project is a series of design prototypes which intend to share the knowledge and expand to further development of the related research.
