This study, in order to investigate the perspectives on family communication between children and parents, had conducted a survey and after the completion of the survey analysis carried out interviews in writing targeting some of university students as children. For questionnaires, FACES III, a tool widely used for measuring family adaptability and family cohesion, was translated and used. This tool can measure the difference of ‘perspectives on everyday family conversation’, ‘perspectives on ideal family conversation’ and ‘the difference between day-to-day and ideal family conversation’, between parents and children. From 49 families with university students as their children participated in the survey, responses of 49 children, 30 fathers and 38 mothers were finally analyzed.
The analysis result on ‘family cohesion’ and ‘family adaptability’ on day-to-day and ideal conversation between parents and children was as follows: Overall, response average of parents on ‘family cohesion’ and ‘family adaptability’ was higher than that of children. The comparison of response differences between parents and children on day-to-day family conversion showed its significance in areas of ‘control’, ‘discipline‘ and ‘family adaptability average’. The comparison of response differences between parents and children on ideal family conversion showed its significance in areas of ‘emotional bonding’, ‘maintaining of family boundaries’, activity sharing and event participation’ and ‘family cohesion average’.
Next, from the analysis of response differences on participants’ day-to-day and ideal family conversation, the response differences between day-to-day and ideal family conversation in 16 questionnaires out of 20 were significant. This could be interpreted as that all participants were expected to get ready for flexibility and autonomy of communication with more securing unity and solidarity between family members than the current family conversation.
Finally, on the basis of family members’ responses, family system types were analyzed. Focused on children’s responses, classifying family communication types showed 24 balanced, 11 middle-range and 14 extreme family types. However, mother’s responses showed more middle-range than balanced family types, which means inconsistency between family members. And the result of detail investigation on how much consistent family system types of members were by family was that the consistent cases of family system type between members out of 49 families were 21 and inconsistent cases 28. Also, in the aspect of consistency between couples in family system types, there were 11 in consistent cases, more than 8 consistent cases.
