This essay aims at approaching Donghak from three viewpoints: First, Donghak as a history of East Asian Thought; Second, Donghak as a history of Korean thought; Third, Donghak as a Life Philosophy.
"Cheondo"(Heavenly Way), Donghak"s another name, means it is a totally brand new thought in East Asia until 19th. East Asia"s main thoughts have been called Three Teachings, or Rujiao, Pojiao, and Laojiao, and these teachings are based on sage"s guiding discourse, while Cheondo on Hanul"s Words. Cheondo"s Hanul is neither Confucious" Tien nor Christian"s God. It refers anthropomorphic Cosmic Life as well as human life.
The relation of Heaven and man in Donghak is co-active, and this resonates with The myth of Dangun who is born between Heavenly god(Hwanung) and bear(Wongnyu), while in the history of Chinese thought man always have to emulate Heaven.
During Donghak peasant war, Cheon Bongjun"s leadership was based on Donghak"s Life Philosophy. Tanaka Shoujo thought highly of Cheon Bongjun, saying that he tried to change Korean society with religion.
Son Byonghee changed Donghak"s name as Cheondogyo, trying to frame Donghak as the category of religion. In the same way, Lee Donhwa"s Philosophy of New Man tries to frame Donghak as the category of philosophy. Son and Lee"s work aims at modernizing Donghak, explaining Donghak"s Life Philosophy in the modern religion and philosophy.
Hansalim Community which was established at 1986 returned from this academic approach to Donghak"s social movement based on Life Philosophy in everyday life.
