This paper is a theoretical attempt to propose a rhetoric of resistance as an alternative to the rhetoric of persuasion. The reason as well as the necessity for such a proposition is founded on my conviction that rhetorical studies in Korea are mainly dominated by the time-old Aristotelian version of rhetoric as persuasion. As such, it happens that figural analyses of literary text, not specifically mentioning persuasion, are regarded as irrelevant to the domain of rhetoric. Of course, there are few scholars, who struggle to extend rhetoric and apply its methodology to the study of interdisciplinary communication and philosophy. However, we cannot deny the fact that rhetoric in Korean academia is understood mainly as something pertaining to persuasion. It is in this context that I redefine rhetoric more broadly as the process of signification and its effects on society, ‘discourse’ in Michel Foucault’s term. Discourse is inseparable from power and truth as well as from subjectivity, and there is always resistance wherever power is. For Foucault, power is not only repressive but productive as well. I find his theory of power as both repression and production is essential for constructing ‘rhetoric of resistance.’ The subject, who is formed by dominant discourse of the society, can resist also by using it differently. What is important for rhetorical resistance the fact that the site of powerful discourse is called topoi(commonplaces), ideas or set of expressions taken for granted as convincing and persuasive by general public. Power is constituted through such topoi as well as authorized forms of knowledge. Then it follows that the possibility of resistance to power comes from different practice of topoi. I argue that we should be strategically subjected to topoi in order to destabilize and subvert their authority. How? By selecting, combining, rearranging, and redistributing those system of commonplaces in a way that their hold on us is weakened, undermined, and destabilized. As Achilles’ spear wounds and heals at the same time, topos of power become the topos of resistance.
