The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of corpora in phonological studies, and to introduce some recent corpus-based studies of Korean phonology. The use of corpora has become essential since the domain of phonological studies was extended to non-categorical phenomena such as variation and gradience. Early corpus-based studies focused mainly on word frequencies, but recent analyses based on Information Theory depend more on segment probabilities to address the notions like markedness and well-formedness. The type of corpora that we need for phonological studies is a natural speech corpus which reflects the actual use of a spoken language. Such a speech corpus, if developed properly, will be widely used for areas such as a discourse analysis, pronunciation education, and speech engineering.
