Dr. Lee, Yangho received his doctorate degree from the Yonsei University Graduate School of Theology in 1985. He submitted a research on Calvin for his dissertation. After his graduation, Dr. Lee taught as a professor at Hoseo University and Yonsei University. He taught the subject of church history especially Reformation history. He retired on the year 2015 from Yonsei university. This article is a description of Dr. Lee, Yangho’s research and contribution on John Calvin’s theology.
Dr. Lee, Yangho’s research on Calvin brought to light the fact that there is a consistent structure in the thoughts of Calvin with the concept of extra Calvinisticum. Calvin’s thoughts have a central and circumferential structure which form a concentric circle. The themes of Calvin’s thoughts have been interpreted through this concentric circle structure; therefore they have a logical consistency.
Dr. Lee, Yangho’s dissertation has surpassed the existing form of literary interpretation that saw a specific theme as the key to Calvin’s thoughts. Dr. Lee has accurately classified the methodology and contents of Calvin’s thoughts and applied modern academic methods to the interpretation of history. He has fully reaped the fruit of his labor. Dr. Lee, Yangho has proved through a systematic research of the subject and methodology that Calvin is the one who has accomplished the thoughts of the Reformation. Dr. Lee’s research is an important academic contribution and legacy to the modern research of Calvin. Simultaneously, it is an excellent accomplishment which has contributed to the advancement of Korean church history.
