On April 16, 2014, the Sewol ferry sunk into the sea with 304 victims. The cause of the sinking and the truth on the puzzling rescue operations have not been revealed clearly, yet. The initial broadcasting with the title of “All Danwon high school students were rescued” was found to be erroneous. It confused Korean people and deviated the nature of the incident. This essay critically investigates the political functions of the media in the case of the Sewol ferry disaster, and reflects the task left over the Christian professionals. This research paper utilizes interdisciplinary studies of cultural anthropology and the mass media, and offers the Christian alternatives out of the reflections on the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The domestic media as institution reproduced what the bureaucrat stated, broadcasted it for the benefit of the government, while they edited, deleted, and distorted the stories and video images the families of the victims through the framing for the government, which represent the unjust political function of the media. This critical analysis of the function of the media as institutions in the Sewol ferry disaster requires the Christian professionals a new role for the transformation of the Korean media and society.
Perhaps, this role is to offer professional knowledge and objective information as well as to propose an alternative framing from Christian perspectives, which are ready to be utilized for the news programs and articles on such incidents as the Sewol ferry disaster. Therefore, Christian professionals must transform unempathetic, materialistic, individualized Korean churches and society toward justice by offering alternative framing to the media that reflects meanings of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
