This paper attempts to place the rise of populism in the 2016 US Presidential election in a historical context and assesses the distinctiveness of the Trump syndrome. The populist tradition has recurred in the 20th and continued into the 21st century. The campaign of George Wallace, the former Governor of Alabama, for example, framed its agenda as a defense for the average white American against the tyranny of the liberal establishment. Such populism can be used as a tool for an analysis of ‘Trump populism’. After considering questions raised by the revival of the Wallace tradition in ‘Trump populism’, this study explores the future of American politics, looking ahead to the 2020 election.
