Julia Cho is one of the most productively cited and researched Asian American playwrights in Korean academia. Durango published in 2007 has drawn special attention from many Korean critics too because the play is unique in its way of representation, dealing specifically with father-son relationships. The readings of the play among Korean critics are, interestingly, polarized. Whereas some critics interpret the play is about the universal themes, critics from the other side underscore the issue of sexuality and race, focusing on the problematic representation of homosexual identity of Asian American men.
This paper suggests the play’s representation of the sexual and racial minorities differs from racial stereotypes of Asian American manhood. Diasporic subjectivity the play explores enunciates the disparity of the oppressive discourse of the model minority myth. The methodology of the play, also, suggests different way of forming racial and sexual identity as queer diaspora while it brings together father and sons with their respective remembering the wife and mother.
