This study was done to compare depression in elderly people who live alone were associated with male and female. Data were collected through questionnaires from 711 elderly people in rural area and hypotheses were tested using multivariate regression. Data was done with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Regression model for depression in elderly men significantly accounted for 31.7%; age, economic stress, perceived health status, family support and poor dwelling status. Regression model for depression in elderly women significantly accounted for 19.4%; perceived health status, economic stress, poor dwelling status and social activity. Results of this study indicate that elderly male people who live alone are at higher risk for depression than elderly female people. Results demonstrate that depression is an important health problem for elders and show gender differences for factors influencing depression. These results could be used in the developing depression prevention programs.
