Modern period Gyeongseong was a unique place where two separated sphere of activity co-existed: Namchon, a Japanese community district, and Bukchon, a Joseon community district. Both communities cultivated their own culture, and movie theaters were individually developed as well. Theaters in Namchon mainly screened Japanese films with narration provided by Japanese performers. Meanwhile, most films shown in Bukchon theaters were made in Hollywood or Joseon, and the narration was performed in Korean, which indicates the clear difference between management systems and audiences of those two district.
In Gyeongseong, a new liberal-minded generation, often called as Modernboy or Modern-girl, emerged, and they led various changes in the culture and arts of Joseon. Most significantly, the consumer class of culture expanded and scope of culture broadened. After the social status system of Joseon collapsed, culture and art were enjoyed not only by aristocrats but also general public. Also, subjects in art became diverse and new European and North American Art genres were introduced from Japan.
Film likewise was introduced into Joseon from Japan. This fresh genre of art began to be consumed by the people of Joseon, while forming a new viewing culture in the country. As a result, it developed as a new form of leisure activity, and consequently a class of people who enjoy it emerged.
This study aims to understand modern period Gyeongseong’s leisure culture by concentrating on the films and movie theaters enjoyed by people of Gyeongseong, and the cultural phenomenon around them as well. The main research material of this study is articles from newspapers at that time, such as Maeilshinbo, Dongailbo, Gyeongsangilbo and so on. By scrutinizing these historical records, the study traces how the film appreciation culture of Gyeongseong had changed, and discuss its significance in the leisure culture during the modern period.
