Herman Bavinck(1854-1921), together with Abraham Kuyper(1837-1920), was a leading theologian for the neo-calvinism in the Netherlands, that is a renewal movement trying to apply the spiritual heritages of reformed protestant to the modern world. Bavinck’s lecture on The Catholicity of Christianity and the Church (1888) is a still relevant to our times of the 21st century, even though it is delivered 130 years ago. For Bavinck deals with the relationship that how Christian faith relates to the world. In other words, Bavinck shows his understanding and vision of the public responsibility Christian faith and theology should have in the modern world. This lecture not only discloses the characteristics of the neo-calvinism, but also proclaims Christianity as the world religion. In particular, the core conviction and motivation Bavinck wants to show in this lecture is that in the power of the Holy Spirit the gospel of Christ eschatologically change all dominions of human life and the world. In this connection, Bavinck’s spirit is closely related to Kuyper’s idea of the sphere sovereignty of God, stating “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: Mine!”
In Korea, this excellent lecture of Bavinck has not yet been translated into Korean so that our understanding of the catholicity of Christianity and the Church was not so clear. By translating this lecture, this writer hopes Korean Churches have unity in the midst of diversity through the gospel of Christ, just as Bavinck shows the unity in diversity through the scriptures and the history of the world.
